About this Piece
Stacked horizontal bands are a familiar device in abstract painting, recalling both Mark Rothko’s colour fields and the simple division of land, sea and sky.
The bands run from soft charcoal grey at the top, through rust and burnt orange, to near-black at the foot. The paint is dragged across in long horizontal strokes, leaving the canvas weave visible. Touches of iridescent green and pink catch the light at the edges of the bands. It can be read as pure abstraction or as a horizon over water at dusk.
Acrylic on stretched canvas, unframed. Signed indistinctly lower left.
