About this Piece
The lettering credits the original painting to Alexander Maclean, V.P.R.B.A., Vice-President of the Royal Society of British Artists. The print was published by the Artistic Publishing Company of 63 Baker Street, London. Its ‘W.1’ address suggests it was issued between the wars.
A three-masted, full-rigged ship runs under a full spread of canvas across a lively blue sea. White horses break across the foreground and the sky is pale and clearing. The title names her ‘Surprise’, but the print does not say which ship of that name is meant.
Colour reproduction with a blind plate mark. Lettered above the image ‘Copyright Published by The Artistic Publishing Co. Ltd. 63, Baker St. London, W.1.’, and below with the title and ‘From the Original Painting by Alexander Maclean, V.P.R.B.A.’ The signature ‘Macl…’ is reproduced lower right. In a worn gilt frame with a beaded edge. Light spotting to the margins, a small scuff in the sea and old tape at one corner of the frame.
