About this Piece
James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894) came to America from England and painted the yachts of New York Harbour until his death in New Jersey. Currier & Ives made lithographs from his work. The schooner Haze was built in 1853 by George Steers, designer of the yacht America, for William Butler Duncan of the New York Yacht Club. Club members owned and raced her until 1867. She later worked as a pilot boat and cargo schooner, and sank off Honduras in 1908.
Haze runs under full sail through a choppy grey sea, her crew strung along the deck. A second schooner heels away to the left. Beyond lie the low forts of the harbour under a broad, cloudy sky.
Colour print, lettered in script below the image ‘The Schooner Yacht ‘Haze’ in New York Harbour’ and ‘from the painting by J.E. Buttersworth’. Her designer, launch date and dimensions are printed to the left, and her owners from 1853 to 1865 to the right. Framed under glass in a gilt frame with a leaf-moulded edge.
