About this Piece
Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge carries the railway over the River Tamar between Plymouth and Saltash, joining Devon to Cornwall. Prince Albert opened it in May 1859. After Brunel died that September, the railway’s directors put the words ‘I.K. BRUNEL ENGINEER 1859’ on the portals as a memorial.
A green Great Western locomotive leads its coaches off the bridge towards us, steam drifting back across the girders. Behind it stand the lettered portal and the two curved trusses, under a summer sky. The river below is calm, with small boats moored and figures watching from a landing stage.
Colour print after a painting, signed and dated in the plate lower right ‘C.D. Holland. 1998.’ In a cream mount with a gilt slip and a ribbed gilt frame, under glass.
