About this Piece
Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) was the leading painter of French Romanticism. In 1832 he travelled to Morocco with the diplomat Charles-Edgar de Mornay and filled small albums with pencil and watercolour notes. Two of those albums are now in the Louvre and one at Chantilly. They have been reproduced in facsimile several times since 1909.
At the top of the sheet, saddled horses stand among the blue-green spikes of aloes, their red saddle cloths bright against the sand. Robed figures rest nearby. Below are quicker studies: a seated figure in a red cap, a figure carrying a green bundle, and a crowd beneath banners. Pencil notes in French run across the page.
A colour facsimile, reproducing the artist's pencil notes and an oval ‘ML’ stamp at lower left. Mounted in grey-green and framed under glass in a gilt frame.
