About this Piece
Edmund Blair Leighton (1852-1922) was a London painter of Regency and medieval romance. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools and showed at the Academy almost every year until 1920. His original ‘On the Threshold’, an oil of 1900, is in the collection of Manchester Art Gallery.
A young man in a Regency coat and riding boots leans against a green trellised porch, holding his hat and cane. Beside him a young woman in a pale silk dress sits at her needlework, a work basket on the table at her side. Roses climb the red-brick house behind them.
Colour reproduction print. The artist's monogram and date, ‘E.B.L. 1900’, appear lower left within the image. Double-mounted with a pale green line and a printed title plaque reading ‘On the Threshold by Edmund Blair Leighton 1853-1922’. In a gilt frame. The backboard is printed ‘Ruislip, Middx. HA4 8BJ, England (U.K.)’. The glass is cracked and will need replacing.
