About this Piece
The Pont Alexandre III was built between 1896 and 1900 for the Paris Exposition Universelle and named after Tsar Alexander III. Gilt-bronze statues of Fame crown the tall stone columns at its four corners. The painter signs ‘Georges B.’ and we have not identified him further.
The view looks along the Seine in winter, with bare trees arching over the quay on the right. A barge and a moored sailing boat sit on the dark water below the bridge, and the Eiffel Tower rises pale through the haze. The thick palette-knife paint of the original is reproduced photographically.
Colour print on textured paper, signed in the plate lower centre ‘Georges B.’ and inscribed by hand in the lower margin ‘Paris. Pont Alex III’. Framed under glass in a black and gilt frame. Light creases in the sky.
