About this Piece
The watercolours reproduced here are signed ‘Mollie Fisher’ and ‘M. Fisher’, and two are dated April 1978. We have not traced the artist. The pictures record Abu Dhabi in the 1970s, when new mosques and tower blocks were going up across the city.
The first shows a white mosque with twin minarets, a green dome and a pointed-arched portico under a blue-grey sky. The second is a tall clock tower on splayed legs at a roundabout, with a tower block, 1970s saloon cars and a twin-minaret mosque behind. In the third, a smaller mosque with a gilded dome and a single minaret rises above drifts of sand, and a robed figure walks past.
Colour prints, each laid down on coloured card: grey, navy blue and tan. Titled within the image ‘Mosque Abu Dhabi 4.78’, ‘Abu Dhabi’ and ‘Mosque Batin 4/78’, and signed ‘Mollie Fisher’ or ‘M. Fisher’. In matching brass-finish metal frames, under glass.
