About this Piece
Raymond Campbell was born in Surrey in 1956. He taught himself to paint and has worked full time since the age of 22. His still lifes follow the Dutch painters of the 17th century, and old bottles of fine wine are his best-known subject. He showed at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1992, 1993, 2013 and 2014.
Two compartments of a wooden cellar rack hold old bottles. On the left stand a Château Latour, a 1970 grand cru claret under an Alexis Lichine capsule and a 1967 Château Saint-Germain from Calvet. With them are a wedge of blue cheese and water biscuits. On the right a bottle of Dow’s 1970 Vintage Port carries a handwritten cellar tag. Beside it stand a glass of port, a goat’s cheese log on a Châtelain camembert box, a blue and white plate and a drawn cork.
Oil on panel. Signed lower right ‘Raymond Campbell’. In a broad distressed pine frame.
