Allan Clarke, Moorland View, 1990

Allan Clarke signed and dated this watercolour in 1990. We have not been able to trace the artist. The walled fields and open moor suggest the Pennines, but the place is not named.

Rough moor grass fills the foreground, each blade drawn in fine strokes and scratched-out highlights. Beyond, a patchwork of walled fields, copses and a white farmhouse falls away to a pale horizon, where pylons stand in the haze. A grey sky fills more than half the sheet, warming to yellow where the cloud thins.

Watercolour on paper. Signed and dated lower left ‘ALLAN CLARKE 1990’. Glazed, with a cream mount ruled with grey wash lines, in a gilt frame with a foliate outer edge.
