B. M. Hume, A Garden Border Beneath Distant Mountains, 1934

B. M. Hume signed and dated this watercolour in March 1934. We have not been able to trace the artist. A border in full flower in March, with mountains behind, points to a garden far from England, though the place is not recorded.

A lawn sweeps towards a long border of delphiniums, marigolds, phlox and pink and white flowers, edged with a low white ribbon of planting. On the left is a terrace with a pierced balustrade and urns on its piers. A rustic pergola and tall conifers rise behind, and a blue range of mountains lies under summer cloud.

Watercolour on paper. Signed and dated lower left ‘B.M.Hume. March 1934’. Glazed, with a gilt card mount, in a gilt frame. The mount is faded and spotted, and the gilding on the frame is rubbed.
