About this Piece
Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) was one of the best-known French painters of the post-war years. He won the Prix de la Critique in 1948, aged twenty, and is known for spiky black outlines and a sober palette.
This poster advertised an exhibition of his oils, watercolours and lithographs at Galerie Delorme in Trouville, Normandy, from 25 March to 10 April 1989. The gallery also had a Paris address in the rue de Miromesnil. The image reproduces a Buffet harbour view dated 1960. Cranes, chimneys and warehouses line a quay, with a church spire beyond and red-hulled barges at the water’s edge.
Colour-printed poster. Buffet’s signature and the date ‘60’ are part of the printed image, and his large signature is printed below it; the poster is not signed by hand. Framed under glass in a black and gilt moulding, with chips to the black finish.
