About this Piece
Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel (1883-1971) borrowed freely from sailors’ clothing. She sold striped sailor blouses in her Deauville shop from 1913 and wore a sailor’s jersey with trousers in the late 1920s. Her villa, La Pausa, stood above the sea at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera.
The image is widely published as Chanel with her dog Gigot at La Pausa, around 1930. She stands in a garden in a striped top, belt and wide dark trousers, hands in her pockets, smiling down. A large harlequin Great Dane turns to look at the camera beside her.
A modern print with a white border. It carries no photographer’s credit, stamp or edition number. In a cream mount and a black frame.
