About this Piece
A small, unsigned study of a young woman standing before a dressing mirror, from the middle decades of the 20th century. The large dark eyes and simplified forms recall continental decorative figure painting of the 1950s and 1960s.
She stands with her back to us, one hand resting at her hip. The mirror shows her from the front, framed by a white curtain, and her reflection looks out at the viewer rather than at herself. Touches of blue and green suggest the room beyond.
Oil on canvas, thinly painted so that the weave shows through. No signature is visible; one may be hidden under the frame rebate. In a swept gilt frame with an inner gilt slip.
