About this Piece

The painter is unknown. The canvas came from John Bryce Smith of 117 Hampstead Road, near Euston, a brush maker turned artists’ colourman who traded under his own name from 1883 to 1921. His stamp in this scroll-bordered form is recorded on paintings dated between 1892 and 1895, which points to a late Victorian date.

A pale track bends down between banks of scrub towards a whitewashed cottage half-hidden in trees in a wooded valley. Beyond, the land falls away to a far ridge under a low, warm sky. The handling is broad and tonal, with the light gathered on the cottage and the lane.

Oil on canvas, unsigned, on its stretcher and unframed. Stamped on the reverse by John B. Smith, 117 Hampstead Road, London. There are scattered small paint losses, scratches and surface dirt, and the canvas edges are worn.
