English School, A Military Band Under a Striped Canopy

A British military band plays an outdoor concert beneath a striped canopy. The bandsmen wear scarlet tunics, dark trousers and peaked caps. Neither the regiment nor the place is identified.

The band is seen from behind and to one side, seated on folding chairs with trombones, horns and drums and a music stand among them. Trees fill the background, and a crowd of listeners gathers at the right. The washes of coral, green and blue are loose and broken, drawn over in quick pen lines.

Pen and ink with watercolour on paper, unsigned on the visible sheet. Window-mounted in cream with a thin coloured inner line, in a slim gilt metal frame. A small mark on the mount at lower right.
