About this Piece
Fettes College in Edinburgh opened in 1870, founded on the bequest of Sir William Fettes. Its main building, by David Bryce, mixes Scottish Baronial with the French château style. Former pupils include Tony Blair.
The six photographs, all by the Edinburgh firm of Drummond Young, show the Under 15½ cricket Eleven of 1952, the cricket Second Eleven and the Hockey Eleven of 1954, the unbeaten First Fifteen of 1954-55, the Hockey Eleven of 1955 and Kimmerghame House in 1955. The First Fifteen's printed record reads played eight, won eight, 148 points for and 9 against. The same boys appear from one picture to the next. T. C. Garner captains the 1952 cricket side and is vice-captain of the 1955 hockey team, and H. J. Kirsop captains both the 1954 Second Eleven and the First Fifteen. F. H. ten Bos, in three of the teams, is almost certainly Frans Herman ten Bos, later capped 17 times for Scotland at lock between 1959 and 1963.
Original black-and-white photographs, each on its printed mount, titled beneath the school arms and naming every sitter. Each in a slim black frame. Some foxing to the mounts, in keeping with age.
