Fine Silk Qum Rug, Central Persia

Qum, south of Tehran, has been a centre of fine silk weaving since the early twentieth century. This rug is knotted at roughly 100 knots per square centimetre, fine enough for the detail of the design to read clearly.

The design is worked in a well-balanced palette of colours, and the silk pile has the sheen typical of Qum work. The original selvages and kilim ends are intact, and the fringes are original.
