About this Piece

Comic postcards sold in huge numbers in Edwardian Britain, and football was a favourite joke. Many were generic designs with a blank signpost or pennant, overprinted with whichever town the publisher wanted to sell in. Here the sign points ‘To Turnham Green’, the common at Chiswick in west London.

A boy in a red jersey has just put his boot through a heavy leather ball. In front of him a stout woman lies upended in the road, petticoats and striped stockings in the air. The caption, boxed in the lower left, reads ‘Goal’.

Colour print after an Edwardian comic postcard, printed at enlarged size. Signed in the print lower right with an unidentified monogram. The surface carries the grain and toning of an old card, which suggests it was printed from a copy of the original. Pencilled ‘1819’ on the backing board. In a sage-green mount within a black frame.
