British School, Highland Loch, Late 19th Century

Small loch views like this were painted in large numbers in late Victorian Britain, when the Highlands were at the height of their popularity. The artist is not recorded.

Snow-touched mountains rise above a still loch. A line of old fence posts runs into the water from a grassy point, beneath tall pines and ferns. The palette is soft mauve and grey, warmed by evening light.

Oil on card or board, unsigned, in a card mount. Scattered small paint losses, mostly along the edges and in the sky. In a deep Victorian composition frame moulded with ivy leaves and grape clusters, with some chips and losses.
