About this Piece
The etching is signed in pencil by an artist named Hutchinson, whose initials are hard to read. We have not identified the etcher or the place. Etchings of this kind, signed in pencil with a small sketch or remarque in the margin, were popular around 1900.
A wide, still river runs towards a low stone bridge of several arches. On the left bank a tall spire rises over cottages and trees. On the right are mill buildings and a large stand of trees, with small boats moored among the reeds and water-lilies.
Etching, signed in pencil lower left ‘…Hutchinson’. In the lower margin is a remarque of a waterbird skimming the water. In a cream mount with ruled lines and a gilt slip, in a dark oak frame. On the back is the label of Harris & Sons, picture frame makers and gilders, 70 George Street, Plymouth.
