M. Rees, Girl with a Terrier Puppy

The artist signs as M. Rees and has not been identified. The subject and treatment follow the sentimental magazine and postcard illustration of the 1910s and 1920s.

A young girl in profile looks down at the puppy in her arms. Her long auburn hair falls in loose curls over a white blouse with a striped sailor collar. The puppy, white with a brown and black head, rests its chin on her arm. The ground is a plain warm buff.

Oil on textured board or canvas board. Signed lower right in red ‘M. Rees’. A few small losses at the lower left and beside the signature. In a deep ebonised frame with a gilt slip.
