About this Piece
Reuben Ugbine (born Lagos, Nigeria, 1956) is among the most accomplished figurative sculptors working in the West African tradition, bringing to his subjects a warmth and psychological acuity that immediately engages the viewer. This small but beautifully realised painted terracotta depicts a seated child in a pose of quiet contemplation, rendered with the artist's characteristic economy of means and deep sensitivity to the human form.
Terracotta — one of the oldest sculptural materials known to humanity — lends the work an immediacy and warmth that bronze or stone could not achieve. The painted surface enriches the modelling, and the piece is signed on the verso with the artist's name and the date 2005, confirming its place within his mature body of work.
At approximately 14 centimetres in height, this is an intimate cabinet piece perfectly suited to display on a desk, a shelf, or within a vitrine. A charming and genuinely felt work by a sculptor of real accomplishment.
