S. R. Goodman, Arum Lilies in a Japanese Vase, 1921

S. R. Goodman signed and dated this still life in 1921. Nothing further is recorded of the artist.

Four open arum lilies and a single bud rise from dark, glossy leaves against a plain brown ground. The vase is painted in the Japanese manner, with a panel showing two robed figures beneath a rising sun and a band of white dots. The white of the spathes is laid on thickly, so the flowers stand forward from the paper.

Gouache on brown paper. Signed and dated lower right ‘S. R. Goodman 1921’. Under glass in an ebonised moulded frame with a gilt slip.
