About this Piece

The match ball is lettered for Southwick F.C. and the 1912-13 season. The Sussex club of that name was founded in 1882 at Southwick, near Shoreham-by-Sea, and plays in red and black stripes. In 1912-13 it won the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup, beating Lewes 3-2 in the final at the Goldstone Ground, Hove. The striped shirts and the cup in front of the team fit that win, though a Sunderland club of the same name was also playing at the time.

Fifteen men pose in three rows before a painted studio backdrop. Players in striped shirts sit cross-legged at the front, arms folded, with officials in suits behind. A large cup dressed with ribbons stands in the centre beside the ball. Two further members appear in circular insets at the top.

Original photographic print on a cream card, within a grey mount. No photographer’s stamp is visible on the front. Framed and glazed in a dark-stained moulded wooden frame. Light foxing to the cream card.
